About Gale

Gale is a free download manager for Windows, made for people who want fast, reliable downloads without paying for a licence or putting up with ads.

Many download managers for Windows are paid or come with ads. Gale was started as a free alternative that anyone can use, read and improve. It does the things people rely on a download manager for: faster downloads over several connections, resuming after interruptions, taking over browser downloads, saving videos, and running queues on a schedule.

Gale is built with Rust for the download engine, Tauri for the Windows app, and React for the interface. Video downloads use the open-source tools yt-dlp and FFmpeg.

Developer

Muhammad Faizan

Full-stack developer based in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. He builds free tools for developers and everyday users, and Gale is his open-source download manager.

Open source

Gale is released under the MIT License. The code, issue tracker and releases are on GitHub. Bug reports and pull requests are welcome.

Credits

Gale stands on the work of many open-source projects, including Rust, Tokio, reqwest, SQLx, Tauri, React and Framer Motion. It ships yt-dlp (Unlicense) and FFmpeg (LGPL); their licences are installed with Gale and listed in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.
